Which local NOAA pages can you use?
| Waterfront reference | Station | Use |
|---|---|---|
Hudson, Hudson Creek | Choose dates and confirm displayed units and time zone. | |
Aripeka, Hammock Creek | Check the creek reference rather than using a distant beach table. | |
Gulf Harbors | Use the named local prediction station for planning context. |

Why can’t you subtract a tide height from the cap number?
A tide table can use MLLW while a survey labels the wall cap in NAVD88. Those are different reference surfaces. NOAA cautions against extending tidal datums to locations with different oceanographic conditions without supporting measurements. Ask a surveyor to reconcile the references; do not apply a guessed countywide offset.
What else should be recorded?
- Actual water level observed from a safe fixed location.
- Recent rainfall, wind and any official flood or surge warnings.
- Which station, date, units, time zone and datum were consulted.
- Access restrictions reported by the contractor or property owner.
Does a low-tide prediction authorize access?
The contractor must plan around actual depth, safe operations, permissions and permit conditions. A tide prediction does not establish navigable depth, exposed-wall safety or a right to use a private ramp. Check channel records separately from wall elevation.
What measurement is useful for a height change?
Request surveyed cap elevations, adjacent grades and the named datum. The height guide explains the handoff. A photograph of the water touching the cap cannot establish code compliance.
How do you read a tide entry without mixing references?
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
Station | Keep the name and station ID. A nearby prediction is context, not a measurement at your wall. |
Date and time zone | Check the selected day and whether the display uses local or another time reference. |
Units and datum | Record feet or meters and the named vertical reference. Do not subtract unlike datums. |
Product | Identify whether you are viewing a prediction or an observation. Not every station offers both. |
For a photograph, record its actual time and location separately. You can then describe what was visible without claiming that the prediction measured your cap clearance. If you need an elevation comparison, ask a surveyor to tie the relevant measurements to a compatible reference.
Why can actual water differ from a tide prediction?
NOAA explains that onshore wind can raise water levels and offshore wind can lower them; fronts and tropical storms can also cause rapid changes. Treat the tide table as one input alongside current weather and site observations, not a guarantee of a usable construction window.
For scheduling
Ask the contractor which site conditions must be confirmed on the day, what would postpone work and how temporary protection is maintained during a delay.
For a recurring problem
Keep a dated record of the same wall section, water level relative to a fixed visible feature, rainfall and drainage observations. Give the record to the assessor without assigning a cause.
